More Like Mary

More Like Mary

…but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. – Luke 2:19

Today I am inspired by Mary, the mother of Jesus. So often we forget that our Lord and Savior was also someone’s little boy! First steps, first words, hugs and kisses, chasing lizards, favorite treats, making messes… Jesus did it all, and Mary was right beside Him.

Sometimes we can get so caught up in the day-to-day of motherhood, we forget to treasure the little moments with our children. They grow so fast, and time flies by. Scripture tells us that Jesus also grew… like any other child, He grew in stature and He grew in emotion and He grew in admonition of the Lord.

We don’t know much about the Lord until he began His work here on earth, but there was someone who kept the memories of that little boy hidden in her heart. She thought of them often. Whether we’re sidetracked by a career, chronic illness, stress, marriage issues, financial woes, or a myriad of other things, it’s pretty much guaranteed that we will be distracted as our children are growing. Some days seem so hard, that we almost wish these precious moments away. We wait for that “next season” in our lives, hoping it will be easier, and let’s face it, lend us more sleep!

So today I challenge myself to be more like Mary. Even though she knew who Jesus was, she wasn’t rushing his youth. She was keeping all these moments in her heart, and she thought of them often. Not with sighs and longings for another season, but with love in her heart and a yearning for those sweet days.

Father, please help us as Mothers to try to walk more as Mary did with little boy Jesus. Help us to take the precious moments with our children, even the ones that feel depleting, and wrap them carefully, and hide them away in our hearts to treasure when they’re grown. In Jesus’ Name, Amen…
